A Cottage by the Sea – Carole Matthews

A Cottage by the Sea – Carole Matthews

Regular Book Boy readers will know that I have a secret love for the ‘Chick Lit’ genre.

I blame it on being exposed to the amazinng works of Freya North and Lisa Jewell.

Yes, I may be a 30-year-old man, but the combination of a person seeking their perfect partner, coupled with a great storyline really strikes a chord with me

*it’s probably because I’m single and have been for six years, but I’m an old romantic at heart*….

Anyway, “A Cottage by the Sea” by the wonderful Carole Matthews was, quite frankly, bloody brilliant – it’s a perfect beach read. Whether you’re a girl or a guy – trust me on this, dear reader, this is a book you need to pack in your suitcase. It’s fantastic on a number of levels……

Basically the book tells the story of three women.

Carole MatthewsGrace, Ella and Flick are three 30-something ladies who have been friends since university.

Grace is an accountant with a boring husband called Harry who just wants to drink wine.

Ella is an artist with a roadie/rocker husband called Art who doesn’t want to settle down.

Flick is a jetsetter with a gorgeous partner called Noah, a hunky chap who isn’t suited to her..

Now, when Ella asks her friends to come and stay with her for a week in her beautiful cottage by the sea in Wales, sparks fly!!!!!

Our main narrator, Grace, who is sick and tired of Harry and his alcoholism ends up falling for Flick’s gorgeous partner Noah.

Oh dear.

When it turns out that Ella is pregnant with Art’s baby, she struggles to deal with the fact he is a man who doesn’t want to be tied down.

And gorgeous Flick….. well she loves her booze, and after she proposes to Noah one night, the lovable Grace’s heart breaks……

In a nutshell this is a book set in a Welsh cottage, a story of 3 couples and 6 different love stories. But what I loved about it was the way Carole Matthews created an enjoyable read full of emotion.

You will be made to feel angry.

You will laugh and you will root for our heroine Grace.

In addition to this, the way Carole writes about falling for another person when you *should* be in love with your husband was done very sensitively.

This is a book for anyone who thinks they may be in a loveless marriage, but it’s also a book for anyone who thinks their “one” is out there….

….somewhere…

Like me.

One day I will find my soulmate…..this book gave me hope.

I am not ashamed to admit it that I loved this story. It made me laugh, it made me angry and it gave me hope too…

Trust me people, “A Cottage By The Sea” is a bloody brilliant beach read for your holidays. Buy or download it, you will not be disappointed.

The Book Boy Rating – 4/5
